Born in Peebles, Scotland, he emigrated to Australia in 1969, became a full time musician in 1980, and an Australian citizen in 1982.
For the past 35 years or so he has traveled the world with his songs, appearing at many of the major overseas music festivals including Edinburgh, Toronto, Vancouver, Cambridge, Tonder (Denmark) and Philadelphia, to name but a few. In Australia he has appeared at the Port Fairy, Woodford and National Folk Festival many times, as well as the Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Gympie Muster. He has toured extensively in North America (7 tours), Europe (10 tours) and also of course embarked on many tours within Australia.
A prolific, some would say compulsive, songwriter, many of his songs (Leaving Nancy, No Man’s Land (The Green Fields of France), Now I’m Easy, And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda) have been recorded over the years by many other artists including Joan Baez, Donovan, Slim Dusty, The Pogues, Mary Black, Billy Bragg and John Williamson. And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, probably his best- known song, confirmed its iconic status recently by appearing as a question in the well- known board game Trivial Pursuit...
On Stage Eric is a warm and engaging performer, with a shrewd, often self-depreciating wit that helps involve his audience in his performance, and his clear- eyed yet compassionate view of the world means that in his songs he can often get to the heart of the matter with his well crafted lyrics.
